The Moments

These are the moments of my undoing
When the years carousel about my head
Pursuing like so many plaintiffs astride
Their affidavits a little justice that
Cannot come from nothing.

These are the hours of the everlasting years
That last until the last day’s fears
That bring the little rueing minute
That rides the tired moment of my undoing.

And these are the moments in heroic seconds
When volition like the laboured crest is conquered
And the mission the moment of the mesmeric view
Is diminished into so many days of dreaming
Which before the moment of the last atomic sun
Here in the chamber of reckoning
I can no more remember;
Can no more imagine.
